Guides and Utilities

This page is a catch-all for some useful items from the book or other places.  If you have a useful item you are willing to share, send it to us and we'll post it on the lifecycle-toolkit web site.

Project Plan
This is the combined project plan including all the tasks from the end of each chapter.  The Plan is found in the \other directory as follows:

         \other\projplan.xls

Data Model and Database Naming Standards
Stanford University was kind enough to allow us to include this set of documents.   They are not specific to data warehousing, but most of the principles apply, and some of the class words, abbreviations and so on are great places to start.  Stanford retains the rights to these documents.

      Data Model Naming Standards  (\other\nmngcnv\modelstd\namest.htm)

      DBA Database Naming Standards (\other\nmngcnv\dbstnds\naming.htm)

Note that these pages are directly from their web site and do not comply with the 8-character file name limitation.  If you can't see them in your browser, you might visit Stanford's site directly at the following URLs:
 http://www-leland.stanford.edu/group/da/Name_standards.html
http://www.stanford.edu/group/dba/naming.toc.html

Period Table source file
Chapters 5 and 15 both discuss the Period (or Time) table as one you will likely create in the warehouse rather than source it from somewhere else.  This spreadsheet includes most of the standard elements of a core Period table.  It also demonstrates the SQL insert string generation trick we described in Chapter 15.  WARNING:   These are big files.  It's probably best to copy them off the CD onto your hard disk and open them from there.  These can be found in the /Other directory.
prdtable.xls Excel 95 version (1.6 MB)
prdtbl97.xls Excel 97 version (2.1 MB)

Microsoft Utilities

The following three executable files are in the \Other directory.  The file names are listed below.

PowerPoint Viewer (ppview97.exe)
The Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97 allows people who use Microsoft PowerPoint to share their presentations with users who do not have PowerPoint. We haven't set this up to be directly installable from the CD-ROM, so you may have to save the program to disk and run it from there.  The file is in the \Other directory, and it's called ppview97.exe.  If you need help getting this working, Microsoft has a help page at:

http://www.microsoft.com/powerpoint/internet/viewer/viewer32.htm

Word Viewer (wd97vr32.exe)
Same thing for Word.  Again, if you have questions or problems, the best thing to do is check out the Microsoft site for more info. They also have a 16 bit version at this site.

Excel Viewer (Viewer.exe)
Same thing for Excel.  There are some restrictions on the platforms the viewer supports.  Check out the site below for more info.
