Data Warehouse
Bus Architecture Example
The folder \dwbus-ex contains a detailed logical design for a fictitious telecommunications company. This design starts with the Matrix planning step from Chapter 7, and assumes the designer then uses the four step method to define the process, the grain, the dimensions and facts for each constituent data mart.

The data marts are presented in two levels of detail.  First, at a high level, where all the possible dimensions are described, and then at a specific logical level where the dimensions are matched precisely and correctly to the grain of each fact table.

The overall Matrix is the roadmap for remembering which dimensions are needed with each data mart, and for guiding the discussion among data mart teams for successfully conforming these dimensions across data marts.

The following links take you to each level of the design. Be careful opening these with your Web browser.  The last two are large and may take a few minutes to open.  If you don't have one of the applications necessary to read a file, check out the Guides and Utilities section and see if a reader is available.

File Name Item Name Description
1busarch.xls Bus Architecture Matrix This matrix shows the relationships between the dimensions and the possible data marts.
2model.doc High Level Data Mart Models This is the next level of detail down from the Matrix.  It includes models for several of the data marts identified in the matrix above.  This is a big file -- close to 900K.  It might be a good idea to open it in Word.
3logical.doc Detailed Logical Model The logical model includes table and column names for most of the dimensions and seven of the fact tables.  It is close to 250K.
